Ending Period Poverty Starts With You.
1 in 10 girls in Africa miss up to a week of classes every month or drop out of school because they can’t afford sanitary products.
“At Viva Lily we passionately believe it is a basic human right to be able to manage your period with safety, dignity and good health.” (Sarah Fox – Founder)
With no money for menstrual care products the majority of women and girls are forced to use rags, rolled up newspaper, mattress stuffing, grass, ground up maize cobs or cow dung to stop the flow of menstrual blood. This results in rashes, irritations, a higher risk of contracting HIV/Aids and other long term reproductive health issues.
The lack of sanitary wear has a direct impact on a girl staying in school. Without sanitary wear most girls drop out before the end of secondary education. Once out of school young girls are more vulnerable to sexual or physical abuse and becoming a teenage bride. They have limited job prospects and are often mothers whilst still of school going age.
